A truck from a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) convoy became submerged in the Essequibo River on Wednesday, 23 October 2024, while transporting troops from Region 9 (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo) to Georgetown. The incident occurred at Kurupukari at around 2:00 a.m.
All military personnel were safely rescued, though two soldiers required medical evacuation to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, where they are currently receiving treatment.
The truck has since been recovered, and the GDF has dispatched a response team to the scene to provide further support and investigate the cause of the accident.
The GDF has since publicly expressed it’s gratitude to those who provided immediate assistance and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all ranks.
