Three hundred sixty (362) community leaders from across Guyana were officially sworn in as ex-officio Justices of the Peace (JPs) and Rural Constables (RCs), during the final day of the National Toshaos Council (NTC) confab 2024, which concluded on Friday at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre (ACCC).
Among those sworn in were 114 Toshaos, who assumed the role of Justices of the Peace, while an additional 248 Toshaos, senior councillors, and Community Development Council (CDC) chairpersons were appointed as Rural Constables. Following the ceremony, each officer was formally issued with their instruments of office.
The ceremony, which served as a central feature of the conference’s closing day, saw the newly appointed leaders solemnly taking their oaths of office. Before Magistrate Abigail Gibbs and Khali Pareshram, head of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Strategic Planning Unit, the leaders pledged to serve their communities with unwavering integrity, fairness, and impartiality.
Magistrate Gibbs praised the leaders for their commitment to their communities and expressed confidence in their ability to uphold their responsibilities with the highest standards of fairness and grace. She emphasised the crucial role they will play in fostering justice and maintaining peace within their respective regions.
