Three individuals have been formally charged today in connection to the alleged murder of Lisong Yang, a Chinese national, during a robbery incident that occurred on March 14th, 2024, at Eteringbang Landing, located along the Cuyuni River in Guyana’s Region Seven.
Darvy Diaz De Costa, Oscar Alside Scanio, and Pharrell Prince Adelph appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court #5 at approximately 10:30 hrs this morning. They faced charges of Murder in the course or furtherance of a robbery, as per Section 100(1)(c)(i) of the Criminal Law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01. The trio did not enter a plea and have been remanded to prison pending further proceedings. The case has been transferred to the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court, with the next hearing scheduled for April 24th, 2024.
The charges stem from a harrowing incident where a three-man gang invaded a supermarket owned by Yang Lisong, aged 40, and his wife, Wen Shuping, at Eteringbang. Reports indicate that the assailants brutally murdered Yang and seriously injured his wife during the robbery, which occurred around 14:00 hrs.
The suspects, identified as one Guyanese national, one Venezuelan national, and an individual whose identity remains unknown, were apprehended following swift police action. Eyewitnesses revealed that while police initially reported three suspects, local residents suggested that there might have been five involved in the crime. They claimed that three individuals acted as lookouts while two others entered the supermarket to perpetrate the heinous act.
Alerted by a concerned customer who noticed unusual activity at the locked supermarket, law enforcement swiftly responded to the scene. The customer’s vigilance potentially saved Wen Shuping’s life, as she was found injured but alive inside the building. Her husband, however, was tragically discovered murdered, his throat slit, in one of the rooms.
Upon police intervention, one suspect, Pharrell Adelph, was caught attempting to exit the premises, while the others were apprehended inside the building. Investigations revealed Yang’s lifeless body with a grievous neck wound, while his wife suffered facial lacerations but survived the ordeal.
