The European Union’s Ambassador to Guyana, René vas Nes, has underscored the critical role of safety and security in attracting foreign investment to Guyana. Speaking during the opening of the high-level Regional Security System (RSS) Council of Ministers’ Meeting, Ambassador vas Nes emphasised the link between economic development and security, addressing concerns expressed by potential investors regarding the safety of the country.
During the inaugural EU Global Gateway Economic Mission in 2023, European companies exploring business opportunities in Guyana had raised concerns about safety. Ambassador vas Nes commended the dedication and professionalism demonstrated by local authorities in addressing these concerns, stating, “Safety and security are obviously key considerations in making investment decisions, and thanks to your dedication and professionalism, we can answer that question positively.”
The government of Guyana has prioritised safety and security as part of its strategy to attract foreign direct investment and stimulate economic growth. Significant investments have been made annually to strengthen the capabilities of law enforcement agencies such as the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Guyana Fire Service (GFS), and Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU), among others.
Ambassador vas Nes also highlighted the EU’s ongoing support for the RSS and its commitment to enhancing law enforcement in the Caribbean region. The EU’s assistance includes various programs aimed at combating transnational organised crime, cybercrime, and drug trafficking. These initiatives, such as EL PAcCTO and the Latin America Caribbean Cyber Competency Centre, aim to bolster the region’s security infrastructure and promote cooperation among member states.
“Organised crime, drugs, cybercrime, all these undermine the very foundation of societies and indeed the core principles of the EU – human rights, democracy, and the rule of law,” emphasised Ambassador vas Nes. He reiterated the EU’s commitment to upholding these values and increasing cooperation with member states through support for security-related programs like the RSS.
In conclusion, Ambassador vas Nes emphasised the importance of maintaining a safe and secure environment to foster economic development and investment in Guyana. He affirmed the EU’s dedication to partnering with regional stakeholders to address security challenges and promote stability in the Caribbean region.
