The University of Guyana’s Faculty of Engineering and Technology has marked a significant milestone by securing its inaugural international accreditation for the Associate of Science in Petroleum Engineering and the Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Engineering programs. The accreditation, bestowed by the London-based International Energy Institute, underscores the faculty’s commitment to academic excellence and global standards.
The accreditation process culminated after a rigorous evaluation visit conducted by a five-member team from the International Energy Institute in February. Following a favorable verbal report during the visit, the formal notification confirming the accreditation was recently received by the University of Guyana.
Initiated in the 2017/2018 academic year through a collaboration with the University of Trinidad and Tobago, the petroleum engineering programs have swiftly gained recognition. Notably, the programs have witnessed high enrollment rates, with significant participation from young women, highlighting their relevance and appeal in addressing industry demands.
Dean Verlyn Klass spearheaded the accreditation efforts, supported by Assistant Dean Basheer Khan and Prof. Neal Alleyene from the University of Trinidad and Tobago. The attainment of international accreditation not only affirms the quality of education but also enhances graduates’ prospects for international mobility and professional recognition.
Expressing elation at this achievement, the Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Paloma Mohamed, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, and the Senior Management Team of the University of Guyana extend their congratulations to the faculty and students. The accreditation reinforces the University’s commitment to ensuring quality assurance in teaching and learning, as part of its overarching vision for academic excellence.
Graduates of the petroleum engineering programs are highly sought after in Guyana, typically securing employment within five months of graduation, if not sooner. This accreditation further solidifies their credentials in the competitive job market.
