The People’s National Congress Reform (PNC/R) opposition party today by way of a strongly worded statement reiterating the need for an extensive investigation into corruption in Guyana, emphasised the need to start with Bharrat Jagdeo and the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) regime. The PNC/R accuses Jagdeo of using his recent anti-corruption stance as a façade to protect himself and the PPP while deflecting attention onto public servants.
According to the PNC/R, Jagdeo’s newfound interest in corruption investigations is a tactic designed to create the illusion of concern while safeguarding his position and that of the PPP. They assert that this move aims to mislead the people of Guyana into believing that the PPP is committed to combating corruption, whereas, in reality, they are the architects and enablers of systemic corruption.
The PNC/R insists that the people of Guyana will not be intimidated or deceived. They argue that if Jagdeo and the PPP are genuinely dedicated to fighting corruption, they should begin with an independent investigation into the allegations of bribery and corruption against Jagdeo, as exposed in a Vice News documentary. The opposition party points out that the early dismissal of 19 fraud charges against President Ali and other former ministers sends a troubling message that corruption is tolerated at the highest levels of government.
The PNC/R underscores that the PPP regime must not be selective in its investigations and prosecutions. They call for equal treatment under the law, insisting that serious allegations against PPP members, their families, friends, and associates must be thoroughly investigated. Any breaches of the law should result in appropriate legal action, regardless of the individuals involved.
The opposition party was firm that they support the investigation and prosecution of senior police officers, public servants, private citizens, and anyone involved in corrupt activities. However, they object to what they perceive as the regime’s practice of shielding its elite while targeting public servants to divert attention from the PPP’s own corruption. The PNC/R contends that the PPP has created conditions that allow corruption to flourish throughout Guyanese society.
As such, the PNC/R is demanding a comprehensive and impartial corruption investigation that includes Bharrat Jagdeo and the PPP regime. They argue that only through such an investigation can public trust be restored and justice be equally applied across all levels of society.
