The construction of 32 concrete bridges along the Kurupukari to Lethem corridor is progressing swiftly, with the final bridge at Pirara expected to be completed by Christmas, according to Minister of Public Works Bishop Juan Edghill.
During the fourth day of the National Toshaos Council Conference, Minister Edghill assured that despite challenges, the government remains committed to completing the Pirara bridge within the promised timeline. “We are committed, with all of the problems and all of the situations, the Pirara bridge will be completed before Christmas this year,” the minister stated.
Minister Edghill also addressed residents of Region Nine, emphasising that a high-level meeting was recently convened with Vals Construction, the contractor responsible for the project. The contractor has assured the government of the bridge’s timely completion. To further support the project, senior engineers will be dispatched to the region over the weekend to collaborate closely with the contractor.
The $410.2 million Pirara bridge is being constructed to international standards and is expected to significantly enhance transportation along the Kurupukari-Lethem corridor, improving connectivity and facilitating smoother travel to and from the hinterland.
This bridge is part of a broader strategy by the PPP/C government, led by President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, to advance hinterland development through enhanced infrastructure. The Kurupukari to Lethem project, which includes the construction of 32 bridges, is complemented by the ongoing development of 13 bridges from Linden to Mabura Road, further strengthening the region’s interconnectivity.
In addition, Minister Edghill announced that repair work has commenced on the Santa Rosa bridge in Region One, following the recent awarding of the contract. He noted that these ongoing infrastructural projects are crucial to the overall development and integration of hinterland communities and their residents.
