The Government of Guyana is considering the possibility of constructing bridges to connect the Essequibo Islands of Wakenaam and Leguan, as well as establishing permanent crossings at Kwakwani and Kurupukari, according to Head of State, President Irfaan Ali.
President Ali in a statement on Sunday, highlighted that his administration is actively exploring the potential repurposing of the existing Demerara and Wismar River bridges’ structures for these new projects. The President emphasised that these developments are part of a broader strategy to improve the nation’s transportation infrastructure, with the goal of boosting productivity, reducing business costs, and enhancing competitiveness.
He used the occasion to reiterate “We are already looking at the placement of the existing Demerara River Bridge [at] the Kwakwani crossing, the Kurupukari crossing, and looking at the possibility between Wakenaam and Leguan,” President Ali stated. “Our technical and advisory teams are reviewing all options, and once the new Demerara River Bridge is completed, we will commence works on relocating the existing structure to maximise its utility.”
Meanwhile President Ali, further noted that discussions within the Cabinet are ongoing to finalise a comprehensive approach aimed at improving the movement of goods, services, and people across both the Demerara and Berbice River Bridges. These bridges are critical to connecting various parts of Guyana’s economic network and facilitating the flow of commerce.
“As such, before the end of this year, I’ll be addressing these matters nationally,” President Ali added. “I will make announcements that will ensure improved competitiveness in terms of transport costs, increased efficiency, and reliability. All decisions will be made in the best interests of consumers, businesses, and the expansion of economic activity across Regions Five, Six, Three, Four, and the entire country.”
