In a generous display of support, the Night Shelter in East La Penitence, Georgetown, has received a substantial donation of essential items from the humanitarian organisation, Food for the Poor (FFTP). The donation includes hospital beds, walkers, wheelchairs, microwaves, paint, and furniture, all intended to enhance the shelter’s services for its vulnerable residents.
During a modest handover ceremony on Friday, Sheila Veersammy, Administrator of the Night Shelter, expressed deep gratitude for the continued partnership with FFTP, noting its critical role in sustaining the shelter’s operations.
“Food for the Poor has consistently provided essential support to the Night Shelter. Once again, they have stepped forward to strengthen the services we offer to the homeless. We are incredibly grateful,” Veersammy remarked.
Food for the Poor’s Gifts-in-Kind Manager, Tabitha Barnwell, highlighted the organisation’s long-standing commitment to assisting the Night Shelter, as well as eight other elderly homes in Georgetown. Chief Executive Officer of FFTP, Andrea Benjamin, echoed these sentiments, emphasising the organisation’s dedication to aiding society’s most vulnerable populations.
“We are here today as part of our ongoing mandate to support the most vulnerable in society. The Night Shelter plays a vital role in providing essential services to those in need, and Food for the Poor Guyana Inc. remains firmly committed to supporting such development efforts across the country,” Benjamin affirmed.
In addition to the donated items, a new kitchen facility is currently under construction at the Night Shelter, as part of an initiative led by Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr. Vindhya Persaud. Once completed, the kitchen will serve hot meals and cater to the dietary needs of residents with conditions like diabetes and hypertension, further improving the quality of care offered at the facility.
