Guyana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Hugh Todd, signed two key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with China’s Vice Minister of Commerce and International Trade Representative, Wang Shouwen, on Friday. These agreements, which focus on trade facilitation and green development, were finalized after productive discussions between the two delegations.
According to a release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the MoUs aim to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two countries. One MoU addresses trade facilitation, while the other focuses on promoting investment cooperation in green and low-carbon development. These agreements are expected to boost trade and investment ties between Guyana and China, further enhancing economic collaboration.
The signing took place on the sidelines of the Fourth Ministerial Conference of the China-Caribbean Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum, held in Hainan, China. During the conference, Minister Todd highlighted the importance of closing the existing trade gap between the Caribbean and China through a rules-based framework, in line with international law. He also underscored Guyana’s ongoing economic transformation and expressed the government’s interest in expanding collaboration with China in critical areas such as food security, energy security, and climate resilience.
Minister Todd further emphasized Guyana’s readiness to welcome investors from both the Caribbean and China, encouraging partnerships in the country’s rapidly growing economy. As Guyana continues its development trajectory, opportunities in sectors like agriculture, energy, and sustainable development are becoming increasingly attractive to foreign investors.
Caribbean nations attending the forum included Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, The Bahamas, Cuba, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, with Haiti participating as an observer.
