US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has reaffirmed the United States’ support for Guyana’s territorial integrity while praising the nation’s leadership role within CARICOM. His remarks came during a meeting with Guyanese President Dr. Irfaan Ali at the United States Mission to the United Nations.
Blinken highlighted the strong partnership between the two countries, recalling his visit to Guyana with fond memories. “Mr. President, thank you so much for being here today. And thank you even more for the partnership that we’ve had between our countries. I have very fond memories of my visit and the incredible hospitality of our friends and colleagues in Guyana,” he said.
The US Secretary of State further emphasized Guyana’s leadership in regional efforts, particularly its contributions to addressing the situation in Haiti. “We see this partnership in what we’re doing together not only between us but also, for example, in Haiti. Guyana’s leadership in CARICOM has been critical,” Blinken noted. He also underscored the importance of continued collaboration in supporting the Multinational Security Support mission in Haiti, aimed at addressing the escalating violence and instability in the country.
On Guyana’s territorial concerns, Blinken pledged the unwavering support of the United States, stating, “We also stand strongly for the territorial integrity of Guyana, and we’ll continue to stand with you on that and on so many other things.”
President Ali, in response, expressed his gratitude for the continued US support and reaffirmed Guyana’s commitment to shared values within the region. “It’s an honour to be here again to celebrate our strong partnership, but also to reiterate our commitment, our shared values in the region – the rule of law, democracies, and ensuring that we do all we can for the people of Haiti,” Ali remarked.
The Guyanese leader also emphasized the importance of a humanitarian approach in addressing the crisis in Haiti and acknowledged the robust bilateral relationship with the United States, citing expanded trade and enhanced cooperation on security matters. “We are committed to the interests of all of us here in the region. And we thank the United States for the very strong support on sovereignty and territorial integrity,” President Ali said, affirming his government’s dedication to further strengthening the partnership.
