Head of State, President Irfaan Ali, has unveiled a new publication offering an in-depth examination of the factors and challenges impacting food security in the Caribbean and beyond.
Titled Achieving Global Food Security: The Caribbean Experience and Beyond, the book was launched on Saturday at the Blavatnik School of Government, University of Oxford.In the publication, President Ali, who is leading the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) “25 by 25” initiative aimed at reducing the region’s food import bill by 25 per cent by 2025, outlines strategic policy recommendations to address the pressing issue of food security.
The Caribbean region is currently grappling with soaring food and fertiliser prices, along with disruptions to its labour force, making the issue even more urgent.
The book presents an innovative approach to combating hunger, focusing on the region’s unique agricultural potential and opportunities for investment. Published in partnership with World Scientific Publishing, the work serves as a crucial resource for academics and professionals engaged in research on food security, international development, and Caribbean studies.One chapter specifically highlights current and future initiatives in Guyana, reflecting the nation’s pivotal role in regional food security efforts.
The publication has already received critical acclaim, with Professor Amitav Acharya, a renowned academic and UNESCO chair, hailing it as a necessary and timely contribution to one of the world’s most urgent global challenges.
