The Mayor and Town Council of New Amsterdam has suspended PPP/C Councillor Carol Trim, following allegations of disorderly conduct, a decision she claims is a politically motivated attack in response to her calls for financial transparency within the council. The suspension, announced on Monday, has sparked controversy, with Trim accusing the council of attempting to silence her after she raised concerns over financial irregularities.
At a press conference, Mayor Wainwright McIntosh confirmed that the council voted to suspend Trim, explaining that the decision was made in accordance with the standing orders and rules governing the body. McIntosh emphasized that the motion was not taken lightly and followed what he described as a pattern of disrespectful behavior by Trim toward her fellow councillors.
He stated that her conduct had disrupted the “collaborative spirit essential for good governance” and hindered the council’s ability to function effectively. The Mayor further noted that the council is committed to maintaining a high standard of professionalism, and it is crucial for all members to work together in a spirit of cooperation.
According to McIntosh, Trim’s actions had consistently undermined this process, leading to strained communication and a breakdown in collaboration. The New Amsterdam Town Council comprises 14 councillors, with six from the PPP/C and eight from the APNU+AFC.
According to Trim, there was an equal number of councillors present from both sides during the vote, and Mayor McIntosh exercised his vote twice—once as a councillor and again as Mayor—to break the tie.Trim has since, vowed to fight the suspension, stating that she is seeking legal advice on her next steps.
She remains adamant that her suspension was unjust and politically motivated, adding, “When there are irregularities, no transparency, I stand up as a PPP councillor, so the next best thing was to use power to suspend me, which he did in the wrong way.”
