Georgetown police have commenced an investigation into the alleged discharge of a loaded firearm with intent, which left a 50-year-old Chinese businessman, Jianqing Chen, hospitalised with multiple gunshot wounds.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:07 a.m. on 8 October 2024, outside First Choice Chinese Supermarket on Durban Street.Reports suggest that the suspect, described as a male riding a black motorcycle, approached the scene armed with a handgun.
Chen, the proprietor of the supermarket and a grey Nissan motorcar registered as PAG #4518, was in his vehicle at the time of the incident.A 26-year-old security guard on duty at the supermarket informed investigators that he observed Chen arguing with someone on his phone whilst seated in his car.
Moments later, the guard heard several explosions, which he suspected were gunshots. He then saw the suspect fleeing westward on Durban Street on the motorcycle. The guard approached Chen’s vehicle and found him slumped in the driver’s seat, covered in blood, with his hand hanging out of the door.
He immediately contacted Marvin Crawford, a 49-year-old businessman who owns the security service responsible for the supermarket. Crawford arrived at the scene shortly after and transported Chen to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he was admitted in serious condition and is expected to undergo surgery. Police recovered an iPhone from the driver’s seat and discovered three spent 9mm shells at the scene. The investigation is ongoing as authorities continue their efforts to apprehend the suspect.
