Police are investigating an alleged murder-suicide involving Yuni Zamora Castro, a 25-year-old Venezuelan national, and a 60-year-old male Venezuelan national identified as “El Tio” (only name given). Both individuals resided at Lot 30 Station Street, Kitty, Georgetown.
The incident occurred at approximately 17:30 hrs on Saturday.Preliminary investigations have revealed that the deceased were reputed husband and wife, living together in a two-storey concrete house located on the southern side of Station Street, Kitty, along with several other Venezuelan nationals.
Anislaidy Diaz Leblanch, a 42-year-old cleaner and cook, reported that she knew the victim Yuni Zamora Castro, as they were friends and worked together at a food shop in Stabroek Market. According to Diaz Leblanch, about four days ago, Yuni informed El Tio that she no longer wanted to be with him, citing his jealousy.
At around 17:00 hrs on the day of the incident, Diaz Leblanch and Yuni returned home from work and were seated on the verandah when El Tio approached Yuni, giving her GYD$1,000 to deduct GYD$200 that he owed her. Yuni told him that she did not have the change and would give him the money later.
El Tio then went to the lower flat of the house and sat on a chair. Yuni later went downstairs and was using her phone when El Tio approached her, armed with a knife, and inflicted multiple stab wounds. Diaz Leblanch, fearing for her life, fled the house.
The police were summoned to the scene, where they found Yuni Zamora Castro lying face-up on the ground, and El Tio was discovered hanging from the roof. Both were pronounced dead by Dr. Pluck of the Georgetown Public Hospital.
It was observed that Yuni sustained 14 stab wounds, while El Tio had nine stab wounds to his chest.The bodies were taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where they await a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
