Three unmasked gunmen carried out an armed robbery at the Jia Run Fa #2 Chinese Supermarket in Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara (EBD) on Saturday night.
According to police reports, the incident occurred around 20:30 hours while the supermarket was still open. The supermarket’s owner, 34-year-old Jinhua Li, a Chinese national, was at the cashier’s counter when the men stormed the premises.
They held him at gunpoint and demanded he hand over all valuables. In fear for his life, Li complied, allowing the men to seize $500,000 in cash, his mobile phone, a quantity of Digicel and One Communications phone cards, along with other valuables.
Before fleeing, the perpetrators removed the store’s security cameras’ DVR, presumably to prevent any evidence from being retrieved by authorities. The police investigation into the robbery is ongoing.
