Naresh Ally, also known as “Little Robbery,” has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for the 2018 killing of Romeza Sukdeo.
The sentence was handed down by Justice Peter Hugh at the Demerara High Court following Ally’s guilty plea to the lesser charge of manslaughter earlier this month.
During the sentencing, Justice Hugh explained that the maximum penalty for manslaughter is life imprisonment. However, he began with a 24-year sentence, taking into account several mitigating factors, including Ally’s age—22 years at the time of the offence—and his intoxicated state when the crime was committed.
A one-third reduction was then applied, lowering the sentence to 16 years. The judge further deducted the time Ally had already spent in custody, resulting in a final sentence of 10 years.Justice Hugh also ordered that Ally participate in rehabilitation programmes to support his reintegration into society upon his release.
Initially charged with murder, Ally pleaded guilty to manslaughter following discussions of both mitigating and aggravating factors during the sentencing hearing. A probation report was also prepared at the direction of the court.Romeza Sukdeo’s body was discovered in 2018 near the Hydronie Market Road in Parika by a security guard.
A subsequent post-mortem conducted by government pathologist Dr Nehaul Singh confirmed that she had died from strangulation and blunt force trauma to the head.
