The Alliance For Change (AFC) has expressed deep concern over the Guyana government’s response to a U.S. Federal Law Enforcement investigation triggered by a complaint from Rickford Burke, a dual citizen of Guyana and the United States. The AFC criticised the government’s approach, noting a pattern of hostility and aggression towards those who challenge its actions.
In a statement issued on August 14, 2024, the AFC highlighted the government’s recent attacks on Justices Gino Persaud and Simone Morris-Ramlall following unfavourable High Court rulings, describing these actions as indicative of a regime increasingly intolerant of opposition and dissent.
The party likened the government’s behaviour to that of a despotic regime, warning that such conduct poses a serious threat to the democratic principles meant to protect all citizens, judicial officers, and businesses.
The AFC expressed concern that rather than addressing Burke’s complaint through proper channels, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) has resorted to ad hominem attacks and threats. The party emphasised that this response only serves to erode the democratic institutions of the country, further damaging Guyana’s international reputation as a free and democratic nation.
“Instead of accepting responsibility for its actions or acknowledging the validity of criticism, the PPP government appears to view itself as beyond reproach, engaging in vicious attacks on anyone who dares to challenge it,” the AFC’s statement read. The party also accused the government of showing favouritism and protection to a select group of elites who, it claims, continue to exploit the nation’s resources.
The AFC has since urged the PPP government to handle the Burke matter with professionalism and restraint, cautioning that any further mishandling could have severe repercussions for Guyana’s standing on the global stage.
The AFC’s warning comes amid growing concerns about the state of democracy in Guyana, as the government faces increasing criticism for its handling of dissent and opposition.
