Detectives in Berbice are investigating a fatal robbery at a jewellery and pawnshop on Trinity Street and Main Road, New Amsterdam. The incident occurred today, Monday, October 7, 2024, when two armed men attempted to rob the establishment, but one of the suspects was fatally shot by the shop’s proprietor.
According to police reports, the robbery took place around 10:20 am when the two suspects, both armed with handguns and wearing hooded clothing, entered the premises.
During the robbery, a customer was shot in the right leg. The owner of the shop, who holds a firearm licence, responded by returning fire, forcing the men to flee with the stolen items.The suspects fled the scene, discharging several rounds as they escaped along Trinity Street.
One of them collapsed in the compound of the New Amsterdam Primary School, where he was found lying face up with a gunshot wound to the chest.Upon searching the deceased, police recovered a Taurus 9mm handgun, a magazine with live rounds, and some of the stolen items.Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
