In a significant move to enhance trade and investment opportunities between Guyana and the United Kingdom (UK), the British Chamber of Commerce Guyana (BritCham) is set to be officially launched in London next month.
The announcement was made by BritCham Chairman, Fizal Khan, during a press conference held on Tuesday at the British High Commissioner’s residence in Bel Air Gardens, Georgetown. The launch event is scheduled for September 11, 2024, at the renowned Lord’s Cricket Ground in London, commencing at 7 PM.
The event will feature presentations and discussions from members of the business community, BritCham representatives, and Guyanese government officials. According to Khan, over 50 businesses from Guyana, the UK, Europe, Canada, and the USA have already confirmed their participation, with 40 of these being Guyanese-registered companies.
British High Commissioner to Guyana, Jane Miller, underscored the importance of this event in strengthening the ties between the UK and Guyana. “Guyana’s economic growth presents a massive opportunity, not only for Guyana but also for the UK. The UK has a long-standing relationship with Guyana, and last year alone, we saw over £1.6 billion in trade between our nations,” she stated.
Miller highlighted the UK’s commitment to being a reliable business partner, known for providing quality goods and services and fostering long-term relationships. “We are not fly-by-night; we develop enduring partnerships and bring innovation to the table,” she added.
The London launch of BritCham Guyana is expected to provide a valuable platform for business owners and decision-makers to explore how the Guyanese market can expand within the UK and vice versa.
Dr. Peter Ramsaroop, Chief Investment Officer and Head of GO-Invest, expressed the government’s anticipation for the event, particularly in engaging the UK diaspora to invest in Guyana. “We are keen on attracting British expertise in the ICT sector. With the advent of artificial intelligence (AI), we see the potential for Guyana to become a data centre hub,” Dr. Ramsaroop remarked.
