Police have launched an investigation following the arrest of a businessman who allegedly discharged a loaded firearm near the Route 44 minibus park in Georgetown.
The incident occurred around 8:20 pm last night at Avenue of the Republic.According to reports, Michael Thomas, a 50-year-old businessman from Bachelors Adventure, East Coast Demerara, was taken into custody after police officers, who were on patrol near the Route 50 minibus park, heard a gunshot. Upon arriving at the scene, officers observed Thomas placing what appeared to be a firearm into his waistband.
A subsequent search conducted by a police sergeant revealed a .32 Taurus pistol, two magazines, and 14 rounds of ammunition in Thomas’ possession. A spent shell was also recovered from the scene. When questioned, Thomas produced a valid firearm licence.
Thomas was arrested and transported to the Brickdam Police Station, where the firearm, spent shell, and ammunition were secured as evidence. The items have been lodged and will undergo ballistic testing.Police have questioned several individuals in the area, though no injuries have been reported. Investigations are ongoing.
