A recent press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation regarding the Multi-Agency Coordination Committee’s meeting to address the influx of Venezuelan migrants into Guyana has stirred controversy and raised questions about the government’s approach to integration.
Minister Hugh Todd’s statement, as reported in the release, outlining the long-term objective of integrating Venezuelan migrants into Guyanese society has sparked concerns among citizens. Many are demanding transparency regarding the formulation of this objective, asserting that it appears to have been made without consultation with the Guyanese people or their elected representatives in the National Assembly.
Critics argue that such a significant decision, with far-reaching implications for sovereignty and territorial integrity, should not have been taken without broader public input or a clearly defined immigration policy in place. They highlight that according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), there is currently no international obligation to integrate migrants, underscoring the need for careful consideration and consultation before implementing such policies.
The opposition APNU+AFC coalition has been vocal in its criticism of the government’s approach, emphasizing the importance of respecting human rights and providing humanitarian relief to migrants while they await safe return to their home country. They condemn what they perceive as a lack of foresight on the part of the Irfaan Ali administration, warning that it poses a significant risk to Guyana’s future and its citizens.
Amna Walton-Desir, Member of Parliament and Shadow Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, reiterated the opposition’s stance, calling for accountability and a reconsideration of the government’s integration plans. She emphasized the need for a more inclusive and transparent approach that takes into account the concerns and interests of all stakeholders.
