Five Hundred (500) families from the West Bank of Demerara, Region Three, were granted house lots in Wales during the “Dream Realised” house lot distribution exercise held on Friday.
The initiative, spearheaded by Minister of Housing and Water, Collin Croal, and Minister within the Ministry, Susan Rodrigues, took place at the ministry’s regional office in Pouderoyen. The effort is part of the government’s broader objective to deliver 10,000 house lots by the end of the year, with a long-term goal of distributing 50,000 lots by 2025.The Ministry of Housing is currently processing land applications up to 2022, and over $6 billion in contracts have been awarded for land clearing and the first phase of infrastructure development in Wales.
Minister Croal assured recipients that they would be able to identify their lands by the first quarter of 2025.“When you look at the macro plans for Wales, it will be a hub, even a commercial industrial hub, that can also create employment opportunities,” Minister Croal emphasized.
The Wales Development Zone is also home to the ongoing gas-to-energy project, expected to reduce electricity costs by 50 percent and offer new job opportunities. In addition, 90 percent of the community will soon have access to treated potable water, supported by the construction of a new community well.
Minister Rodrigues underscored the importance of these housing initiatives, highlighting their role in empowering families and building a brighter future for Guyana. “That’s what we want for future generations—to be better off than we are… And I am extremely happy to be in a ministry that gives people the opportunity to do that,” she stated.
