The Ministry of Finance is developing a software application to streamline the distribution of the $100,000 cash grant to all Guyanese citizens aged 18 and above. Currently undergoing testing, the app is expected to launch soon. The initiative was outlined by Vice President and General Secretary of the ruling People’s Progressive Party (PPP), Bharrat Jagdeo, at a press conference in Georgetown on Thursday.
Jagdeo explained that Guyanese recipients will need to complete a series of mandatory fields within the app, including their name, address, and passport or identification card number, before a cheque can be issued.”Once names are processed and verified, the cheques will be delivered. This is how we anticipate the grant distribution process will unfold,”
Jagdeo stated, emphasising that the process has been designed to ensure transparency and accountability.Jagdeo confirmed that funds for this initiative will be drawn from the National Treasury, further highlighting the government’s commitment to equitable access.
He explained that the government is allowing five months to complete the process, noting that a deliberate approach is essential to mitigate potential risks of corruption.
The grant will also be accessible to Guyanese citizens residing overseas, provided they hold a valid identification card and passport.
However, they must register in Guyana to qualify, as no payments will be processed outside the country. The $100,000 cash grant was first announced by Head of State President, Irfaan Ali as a one-time initiative for adult citizens, developed to avoid administrative complications associated with the previously proposed $200,000 grant per household.
This initiative, projected to cost over $60 billion, will inject significant disposable income into the economy, benefiting adult citizens across the nation.
