In a narcotics eradication operation, police and Coast Guard officers in Berbice uncovered and destroyed over $2.5 billion worth of marijuana at De Veldt, Berbice River. The joint exercise, one of the largest of its kind, was conducted between 05:00 and 12:30 hours on today, Friday.
During the operation, ranks reportedly discovered a suspected stash house containing 1,300 pounds of dried cannabis, 100 pounds of cannabis seeds, 520 twelve-gauge cartridges, and a .22 long rifle with 19 rounds of ammunition.
Further exploration of the area, according to the Police, led to the discovery of three abandoned farms, each spanning approximately three acres. One of the farms contained 40 trays of cannabis seedlings. Additionally, two larger farms, each covering 10 acres, were found nearby. The first farm housed 39,000 cannabis plants, while the second contained 50,000 plants, all measuring between six and twelve inches in height.
The cannabis, along with the stash house and other items, was photographed and subsequently destroyed by fire. The seized firearm and ammunition were transported to the Central Police Station, where they were documented and secured. No arrests were made during the operation.
