Genevieve Whyte-Nedd, the former acting Chief Education Officer (CEO) of Guyana, has passed away following a prolonged illness. Her death marks the end of a distinguished career that spanned over four decades in the field of education.
Minister of Education Priya Manickchand extended her condolences, acknowledging Whyte-Nedd’s significant contributions to the nation. “She served quietly and with pride, leaving behind a lasting legacy,” Manickchand said. The Minister also highlighted Whyte-Nedd’s impact on those she mentored, including her son, Ossie Nedd, who has followed in her footsteps as an educator.
In addition to Ossie, Whyte-Nedd is survived by her daughter, Dr. Nicole Nedd-Jerrick, who currently heads the Enmore Polyclinic.
Whyte-Nedd’s educational journey began at the age of 15 when she started teaching at Ann’s Grove Methodist School, a community where she lived her entire life.
Her career advanced as she took on various roles within the Ministry of Education, working closely with former ministers Dr. Dale Bisnauth, Dr. Henry Jeffrey, and Shaik Baksh.
Despite holding several key positions in the ministry, many of her roles were in an acting capacity. She began acting as Deputy Chief Education Officer (Development) in 1999 and was officially appointed to that position in 2001. Later that year, she assumed the role of acting Chief Education Officer, a position she held until her retirement in 2015. Whyte-Nedd’s husband, Aubrey Nedd, is also a retired teacher. Former acting chief education officer of Guyana Genevieve Whyte-Nedd has died after a prolonged period of illness.
Expressing condolences, Minister of Education Priya Manickhand shared that Whyte-Nedd served the nation “quietly and with pride and left many, many solid contributions.
“You can see her legacy in those left behind her like her son, the beautiful Ossie, himself an educator,” she continued.
Apart from Ossie Nedd, the late educator’s daughter Dr Nicole Nedd-Jerrick heads the Enmore Polyclinic.
After some 40 years as an educator, Whyte-Nedd retired at the pinnacle of her career in 2015. Her widower Aubrey Nedd, is also a retired teacher.
