People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) stalwart, Oscar Clarke, died yesterday following a brief period of illness.
He served as PNC/R General Secretary, City Councillor, Ambassador, Minister, and Diploma. According to reports, despite appearing in good health, he tragically collapsed at home after a brief outing on Wednesday.
Having previously expressed feelings of illness, Clarke was swiftly transported to a private city hospital, where he sadly succumbed. A longstanding Executive member of the PNCR, he notably held the position of General Secretary for an extended period. Over twenty-one years, he served as a Member of Parliament and was honoured with the prestigious Cacique Crown of Honour (CCH) in 2015 for his outstanding contributions to Guyana.
Oscar Clarke, CCH, who served as General Secretary under three different Party Leaders, officially retired on Friday, June 30, 2017. Initially appointed General Secretary of the PNCR on December 1, 1968, Clarke commenced his involvement with the PNC in its youth division and, at just 26 years old, represented the Party in the National Assembly.
His political career included roles such as Parliamentary Secretary in 1965 and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly from January 1, 1969, to December 31, 1969. Over a distinguished fifty-year career, Clarke held various prominent positions, including Minister of State, Minister of Regional Development, Minister of Home Affairs, Guyana’s High Commissioner to Zambia and the Front-Line States, and Ambassador to the Republic of Cuba.
Meanwhile, the PNCR issued a statement mourning the loss of Oscar Clarke, CCH, describing him as a stalwart, former General Secretary, Senior Minister of Regional Development, Diplomat, and devoted party member. The Party extended its condolences to his wife, children, family, fellow party members, and all citizens of Guyana.
