The two day United Caribbean Forum kicked off today at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre with former President of the United States of America (USA), Bill Clinton, lauding Guyana and the region’s commitment to the principles of democracy was “not only honourable, but the economically smart thing to do.”
The two day affair is being hosted by the Dominican Republic Chamber of Commerce in Guyana aimed at strengthening partnership and investment opportunities within the region.
Addressing the gathering Fmr. US President Bill Clinton noted that the Caribbean is a pivotal region for the whole world, and is in fact a testing ground, at the forefront of ravages of climate change being manifest.
This, he said, was in addition to dealing with new sources of wealth. To this end, Clinton in offering his advice said “it has been my experience over a long period of time that diverse groups make better decisions.”
To this end, he lauded Guyana and the region’s commitments to the principles of democracy.
Additionally, he reaffirmed support for the region’s priorities in terms of developing a more sustainable agriculture that will generate better nutrition, income and health, and a sustainable energy future.
According to Clinton “if you achieve them in the right way will cause other people to follow you.”
To this end, he reiterated that over the past two and a half decades since leaving office, he has been trying to help other people achieve their dreams at faster, better and lower cost.
According to Clinton, what this usually requires is cooperation between the Public Sector, Private Sector and Non Governmental Organisations.
Responding to naysayers in relation to public debate critiquing government policies, Clinton was adamant these are many times had by persons that “never had to come to terms with the how question.”
Recognising the Dominican Republic and one of the traditionally better performing economies in the world as well as being on the forefront of cleaner energy “you should be upbeat.”
