The Ministry of Home Affairs has by way of a public statement today, sought to clarify that no extraditions from Guyana to the United States have occurred in 2024, correcting an error made during a News Source broadcast on August 27, 2024. According to the Ministry noted three US citizens, all fugitives with outstanding warrants, were arrested by the Guyana Police Force and chose to return to the United States voluntarily rather than face deportation from Guyana.
Quincy Patrick Hinds, who was charged in the Eastern District of New York in 2019 with conspiracy to import and possess cocaine with intent to distribute, departed Guyana on May 11, 2024. Hinds had initially fled to Guyana after making an initial court appearance and posting bond. Rakeem Antonio Gilgeours, wanted in Prince George’s County, Maryland, for a homicide and two attempted murders, left Guyana on July 31, 2024.
Gilgeours was identified as the shooter in a July 4, 2024, block party incident that resulted in the death of a six-year-old child and injuries to two adults. Ravindra Dharamjit, who is wanted in Queens, New York City, for manslaughter in the second degree, criminally negligent homicide, and flight to avoid prosecution or giving testimony, departed Guyana on August 13, 2024.
The Ministry, as such reaffirmed that extradition involves a formal request from one government to the Government of Guyana, and no such requests were received from the United States for these individuals. The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency and accuracy in matters of public interest.
