Government has reintroduced an annual electricity subsidy of $30,000 for pensioners. The initiative, which was included in the 2024 Budget under the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, is designed to alleviate the financial burden on the nation’s elderly population.
The subsidy will be applicable to electricity accounts registered in the pensioner’s name and will be rolled out starting in August 2024. Both postpaid and prepaid accounts are eligible for this benefit, ensuring broad coverage and support for all senior citizens who meet the criteria.
Eligible pensioners whose electricity accounts do not automatically reflect the subsidy are encouraged to visit the nearest Guyana Power and Light (GPL) office. The utility company in making the announcement said in order to expedite the process, pensioners should bring a valid ID along with the relevant electricity account information.
According to the GPL, for further assistance or clarifications, pensioners can contact the GPL Call Centre at 226-2600 or toll-free at 0475.
