Head of State, President Irfaan Ali has commended China for its significant contributions to Guyana’s economic development, highlighting the decades-long partnership between the two nations.
The President’s remarks were made during a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy at the Marriott Hotel in Georgetown on Tuesday, celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.President Ali used the occassion to highlight China’s progressive model for benefiting Guyana in various sectors, including infrastructure, trade, technology, health, and education.
He acknowledged that several Chinese companies are spearheading key projects in Guyana, such as the second phase of the East Coast Demerara Road Project, the new Demerara River Bridge, Joe Viera Park, and the construction of six regional hospitals.In the healthcare sector, the 19th Chinese Medical Brigade has made substantial contributions, treating approximately 14,000 local patients and performing over 2,300 surgeries.
The brigade also conducted 21 medical outreaches, providing high-quality services to Guyanese communities.“We celebrate the peaceful coexistence of our relationship and decades of diplomatic ties that bind our two cultures together,” President Ali said.
He noted that China plays a vital role in Guyana’s ongoing economic transformation and expressed optimism about the continued growth of this relationship. The President emphasized that Guyana’s goal is to develop a knowledge-based, technology-driven economy that is competitive, resilient, and sustainable, which requires strong international partnerships.
While Guyana continues to strengthen its ties with China, President Ali stressed the importance of expanding its global reach to support the country’s growth. “We must broaden our international footprint to ensure our presence in every corner of the world,” he stated.
The relationship between Guyana and China extends beyond economic and diplomatic cooperation, encompassing military, defense, security, and intellectual partnerships. President Ali recognized the historical significance of the founding of the People’s Republic of China 75 years ago, noting the country’s remarkable advancements and its leadership among developing nations.Chinese Ambassador to Guyana, Guo Haiyan, also spoke at the event, listing the innovative projects underway in Guyana as a result of the strong bilateral collaboration.
She emphasized China’s unwavering support for Guyana’s development and expressed pride in the partnership between the two nations. Ambassador Haiyan also acknowledged that Guyana was the first English-speaking Caribbean country to establish diplomatic relations with China.As the world’s largest developing nation, China remains a major driver of global economic growth and a key partner for over 140 countries and regions.
The event was attended by several prominent figures, including Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hugh Todd, government ministers, members of the diplomatic corps, and private sector representatives.
