The Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) was abuzz with excitement on Sunday afternoon as Guyana welcomed home its women’s cricket team, who clinched the Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Female Under-19 T20 title in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago.
The celebratory atmosphere was electrified with cheers and dances, led by Minister of Local Government and Regional Development, Sonia Parag. Minister Parag expressed the nation’s pride in the team’s exceptional performance, highlighting it as a testament to the widespread skills and talents across the country.
“The investment you have made in your talent and ability has made this country beyond proud, and we want you to know that. We want you to understand that,” Minister Parag remarked to resounding applause.
Minister Parag further emphasized that the government, through the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, plans to engage the team in providing additional support and crafting initiatives to enhance their skills. She reiterated the government’s commitment to youth and sports development, praising the team’s regional and international achievements.
“The government is proud to foster development for youths and sports, and to nurture the talent that you have. You have represented Guyana with immense pride, and I wish you even more success in the future,” Minister Parag added.
The recent under-19 women’s cricket tournament has marked a significant milestone in Guyanese cricket history, showcasing the remarkable talent of young female cricketers and setting the stage for the future of women’s cricket in Guyana.
Cricket West Indies President, Ricky Skerritt, disclosed that since assuming his role in 2021, the organization has hired a national head coach and an assistant coach for women’s cricket as part of a five-year strategic development plan. The plan targets engaging interested individuals aged seven to 17, including those in remote areas.
“This victory is not just a win on the field but a testament to the potential and talent of women’s cricket in Guyana,” Skerritt stressed.
