Minister of Agriculture Zulfikar Mustapha has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bolstering the cattle industry to achieve self-sufficiency in milk production.
Speaking recently, Mustapha highlighted a significant investment of US $20 million by Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) in collaboration with an Israeli company, aimed at advancing the dairy sector in Guyana. This investment is expected to significantly increase local milk production and facilitate expanded exports.
Additionally, it is expected to support operations at the Amaya Milk Plant located at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice, in Region Five.Since returning to office in 2020, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) government has made aggressive strides to reclaim Guyana’s position as a leader in global agriculture. Efforts have included the introduction of black belly sheep, swine, breeding bulls, and other livestock to improve the quality of local stock.
The administration has also boosted prawn and honey production as part of a broader strategy to reduce food import bills for both Guyana and the wider CARICOM region by 25% by 2025.
