The recently convened Central Committee of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) held its inaugural meeting on May 7 at Freedom House, marking a significant moment for the party’s leadership. Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, a prominent figure within the PPP, was unanimously re-elected as the General Secretary, affirming his continued role in steering the party’s direction.
During the meeting, the committee made key appointments, electing 18 Central Committee members to the Executive Committee. These members include notable figures such as Dr. Irfaan Ali, Zulfikar Mustapha, Anil Nandlall, and Vickram Bharrat, among others. Additionally, Kwame Mc Coy, Anand Persaud, and Ricky Ramraj were elected as candidate members, further diversifying the leadership structure.
Zulfikar Mustapha retained his position as Executive Secretary, showcasing the committee’s trust in his capabilities, while Dr. Irfaan Ali was reaffirmed as the Finance Secretary. The appointment of other Secretaries is slated for the next Central Committee meeting, indicating ongoing deliberations and planning within the party’s hierarchy.
In his address to the committee, Dr. Jagdeo expressed gratitude to the outgoing Central Committee members for their dedicated service and contributions. He emphasized the success of the recent 32nd PPP Congress, held from May 3 to 5 at Liliendaal, East Coast Demerara. The congress, themed “Strengthen the Party, Defend Guyana, Unite Our People for Progress and Prosperity,” attracted over 3,000 delegates and observers nationwide, underscoring the party’s broad support and engagement.
Dr. Jagdeo commended the congress for its scale, diversity, and energetic atmosphere, highlighting the depth of discussions and the efficient logistical planning. He extended his appreciation to party members, supporters, volunteers, and stakeholders for their collective efforts in ensuring the congress’s success and for their ongoing commitment to advancing the PPP’s agenda and programs.
