Attorney-at-law Everton Singh-Lammy, representing Ms. Sharmayne Balram, has issued a formal letter to former Minister Nigel Dharamlall, accusing him of reckless actions that have caused significant harm to his client.
The issue arose when Ms. Balram, a resident of Newtown, Georgetown, was informed around July 30, 2024, that Mr. Dharamlall had been communicating with government officials and members of the diplomatic community about a private investigation he conducted. This investigation allegedly implicated Ms. Balram in a campaign to defame him via social media. Subsequently, Ms. Balram was arrested on July 31, 2024, based on a report made by Mr. Dharamlall to the Guyana Police Force.
Ms. Balram firmly denies any involvement in actions, on or off social media, that could damage Mr. Dharamlall’s reputation. Her attorney noted that Ms. Balram had previously reported unusual activity on her social media accounts and professional email to the Information System Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This report, made weeks before Mr. Dharamlall’s accusations, suggested her accounts may have been compromised. A corresponding report was also filed with the Guyana Police Force.
In his letter, Mr. Singh-Lammy criticised Mr. Dharamlall for informing various parties of his private investigation’s findings, labelling such actions as reckless and harmful. He stated that these actions interfere with the administration of the law and are prejudicial to Ms. Balram’s good name.
The letter asserts that upon the anticipated exoneration of Ms. Balram by the police investigation, Mr. Dharamlall will be expected to issue a formal and comprehensive apology. It further advises Mr. Dharamlall to refrain from making any further hasty judgments or actions against Ms. Balram, as these could be construed as unfounded and prejudicial.
Mr. Singh-Lammy warned that failure to comply with these demands within twenty-four hours would result in legal action against Mr. Dharamlall without further notice.
