Guyana’s next major development in the Stabroek Block could likely be ExxonMobil’s Longtail discovery, according to Minister of Natural Resources Vickram Bharrat.
“They are already advancing with the Hammerhead project, and discussions suggest that Longtail may follow,” Bharrat stated.
The Longtail-1 discovery was made in 2018, revealing approximately 256 feet (78 metres) of high-quality, oil-bearing sandstone. Subsequent drilling at Longtail-3 encountered 230 feet (70 metres) of net pay, including newly identified hydrocarbon reservoirs below the original discovery intervals. While appraisal drilling at Longtail-2 did not result in an announced discovery, the Longtail project remains a significant focus.
Minister Bharrat indicated that Longtail is expected to produce more gas than other projects in the Stabroek Block, although Hammerhead, which also contains substantial gas, might see gas being piped to shore before Longtail.
The potential development aligns with the government’s strategic emphasis on the Stabroek Block’s gas resources, currently estimated at 17 trillion cubic feet.
