Head of State, President Irfaan Ali has announced that a National Funeral of Honour will be held on Saturday, September 14, 2024, to commemorate the life and legacy of Sir Shridath Surendranath Ramphal, OE, OCC, GCMG, AM. This tribute will honour Sir Shridath’s remarkable contributions to Guyana, the Caribbean, the Commonwealth, and the global community. The Office of the President, in a release, stated that the funeral will be held at the Promenade Gardens, Georgetown, at 3:00 p.m., with interment following at The Place of the Seven Ponds in the Botanical Gardens. The occasion will feature full ceremonial tributes, reflecting Sir Shridath’s lifelong dedication to preserving Guyana’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, alongside his extensive international work.Sir Shridath, who passed away on August 30 at the age of 95, is remembered for his extraordinary career spanning several high-profile positions. He served as Commonwealth Secretary-General, Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs of Guyana, and Assistant Attorney General of the West Indies Federation. Additionally, he was Chancellor of the University of Guyana, the University of the West Indies, and Warwick University.Recognized globally, Sir Shridath was the only individual to serve on all major Global Commissions that addressed critical issues of the environment, development, and disarmament from 1980 to 1995. His 1992 report, *Time for Action*, as Chairman of the West Indian Commission, remains a vital framework for Caribbean development.The Office of the President has invited all Guyanese to join in paying their final respects to a man whose vision and dedication have left an enduring legacy in Guyana and beyond.
