A 23-year-old man from Onderneeming, Essequibo Coast, has been arrested following an early morning incident in which shots were fired at police ranks.
The suspect, identified as Reno Paton, was taken into custody after an encounter with police during a mobile patrol in the Sand Pit/Onderneeming area.
The incident occurred around 04:00 hours on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, when police officers, led by a Lance Corporal, observed three men behaving suspiciously. A
s the officers approached, the men reportedly opened fire. The police returned fire, prompting the suspects to flee in different directions.
During the pursuit, Paton fell and sustained facial injuries. Police recovered a 9mm pistol from his possession, along with 14 live rounds of ammunition.
A spent shell was also found at the scene.Paton remains in custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations, while police continue to search for the other two suspects who fled the area.
