Police Sergeant Alex Vaughn lost his life on Tuesday during a search operation at Karrau Village, where authorities were scouring for prison escapee Akeem Wong.
Reports indicate that Sergeant Vaughn succumbed to gunshot wounds, though the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. Initial investigations suggest the possibility of friendly fire, a term used to describe a shot unintentionally fired by a fellow officer.
Sergeant Vaughn, who was in charge of the Saxacalli Police Outpost in the Saxacalli Mission, Essequibo River, Region 7, was leading the operation to track down Wong, who had escaped from Mazaruni Prison back in February.
Wong stands accused of brutally murdering 49-year-old David Gomes and 75-year-old Elizabeth Nellie Gomes at their home in Saxacalli last Friday. According to police reports, the suspect, after receiving hospitality from the Gomes family, turned violent, wielding a cutlass to fatally attack both victims. The gruesome incident unfolded while Gomes’ 6-year-old son witnessed the horrifying events, hiding under a bed throughout.
Following the murders, the suspect attempted to clean the crime scene before fleeing into nearby bushes upon hearing approaching boats. The young boy, left traumatized but unharmed, managed to alert authorities by sending a distress message from his father’s cellphone.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the fugitive had been seen in the area and is believed to be the perpetrator of the double homicide. It was also discovered that the suspect sustained injuries during the violent encounter.
