Police are currently probing a tragic incident that unfolded early Tuesday morning at Dazzel Housing Scheme on the East Coast Demerara, resulting in the loss of 24-year-old Ashanti Liverpool’s life. The alleged murder, perpetrated by 31-year-old security officer Stephan Hope of Haslington, ECD, targeted Ashanti, who bravely tried to shield her twin sister, Ishanti Liverpool, from harm.
According to reports, Hope, who shared a common-law relationship with Ishanti, arrived at the sisters’ residence armed with an AR-15 Rifle in search of Ishanti. Despite recent relationship turmoil and Ishanti’s decision to end the connection, Hope sought her out, showing up at the house in the early hours.
Upon Hope’s arrival, Ashanti, in bed with her partner Nicholas, rushed to warn Ishanti of the impending danger. Tragically, before she could reach her sister, Ashanti was shot from behind by Hope, resulting in her fatal injury. Despite her valiant efforts, Ashanti succumbed to her wounds after collapsing in a neighboring yard.
Following the incident, Hope inflicted a chest wound upon himself before being apprehended and transported to the hospital under police supervision. The use of firearms belonging to a private security firm prompted Home Affairs Minister Robeson Benn to take swift action, ordering the immediate seizure of all weapons linked to the Onkar Persaud Security Company, where Hope was employed.
The devastating loss of Ashanti’s life has deeply shaken the community, highlighting the profound impact of senseless violence. Minister Benn visited the scene to offer support to the grieving family and underscored the urgent need for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
As authorities continue their inquiries, the community mourns the loss of a courageous young woman whose selfless act in protecting her sister serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring bonds of familial love amidst adversity.
