Visitors to Guyana were given a warm and vibrant welcome at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Thursday, marking the commencement of the highly anticipated cricket carnival season.
The initiative, organized by the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), featured representatives distributing gift bags to arriving passengers. One enthusiastic visitor shared his excitement about being in Guyana for the cricket festivities.
“I expect the welcome to be outstanding. Having cricket back in Guyana is incredible, and I’m hopeful that our Amazon Warriors will take home the championship again. It would make me extremely proud to see them win,” the visitor told the media.
In addition to enjoying the matches, he mentioned plans to participate in the Carnival parade.
This marks the third consecutive year that Guyana is hosting the semi-finals and finals of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), which coincides with the vibrant cricket carnival parade in Georgetown.
Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce, Oneidge Walrond, highlighted the significance of the “Welcome Vibes” initiative, noting that it sets the tone for what promises to be two thrilling weeks of celebrations.
“The initiative aligns perfectly with the government’s vision to attract more visitors to our shores,” Minister Walrond said in a statement.
She further noted that over the past two years, Guyana has seen a substantial rise in tourist arrivals during this period, with even higher numbers expected this year.
“In addition to the CPL matches, a range of events have been planned, and our tour operators have curated special packages for visitors to explore the natural beauty and cultural diversity of our country,” she added.
The first CPL match in Guyana is scheduled for Friday, September 20, featuring the Guyana Amazon Warriors facing off against the St. Kitts and Nevis Patriots.
